Oh, dear God, why? Why would a professor by so cruel as to assign a group paper?
The paper in question is due in two hours, and I have been tasked with editing... Jesus fucking Christ. I genuinely don't understand how some of these people were admitted into our well ranked private university. One of my partners writes like this. Her sentences are very short. They do not have a good flow. I don't think she knows what a conjunction is. I have not seen one conjunction in anything she wrote. Her segues are not good. Sometimes she changes topics without introducing the next one. The giant panda is an endangered species. They eat bamboo.
While horrific sentence structure may be painful to read, that's not the best part. There are multiple sentences that are copied and pasted directly from, wait for it.... Wikipedia.
Yeah, Wikipedia. Not only did someone blatantly plagiarize without so much as rewording an unoriginal sentence, they took full sentences from the easiest to find source in all of the internets.
Instead of editing, I have essentially rewritten half of the paper.
Wow.

I feel your pain. At least you're actually editing the thing, rather than trusting everybody did a good job like I did then getting a 50/100 on the thing (like I did.). Safe to say that was a one-time mistake.

I'm a bit older than most here (48), and have had the pleasure of writing a scholarly document (doctoral thesis). It sounds like you take writing seriously, and that's a good thing. It's no secret that many, many students lack even basic writing skills. I don't think that's necessarily a product of poor education, rather it's a product of people who no longer read good books. Being as old as I am, I grew up reading books that contained complete sentences, good grammar and punctuation, and nary a "LOL" was to be seen. Good luck with your editing. You're doing yeoman's work, and your team owes you a good meal for saving their ass.

Sounds like your group is made up of slackers. Call them out on it and burn that bridge. I hate doing multi-week group projects , since there is usually at least one asshole who doesn't do jack shit.

I'm a HUGE fan of Stanceworks. I have been for a couple of years. They tend to keep things classy and, generally speaking, they tend to only showcase builds that meet a certain standard of quality, unlike Stance Nation. There's a lot of stance hate on Oppo, but that's okay. To each his/her own.

I am a student as well and hold to my belief that group assignments are just the product of teacher laziness. They don't want to grade so many papers so they make kids collaborate under the pretense that it will improve teamwork. However, it is false and makes the only take away that all people except for you are incompetent twats. But push through it, because if you're bothered with pulling the weight now, it means you're learning and motivated, and it will benefit you later.

I'm not a professor, I just teach high school. Thankfully a while ago I found an academic article that showed that group work actually reduced student AP scores, so I can mostly avoid it entirely for my AP US History class. I am required, as a condition of my job, to have group papers in both my Virginia/US History classes and my Psychology classes. They are almost universally plagiarized/awful and yes, I bust kids at it pretty regularly but I shouldn't have two. Part of "21st century skills" for my students should be standing on their own two feet.
